Your German exam day in India: where, how much, what to bring
Since 1 September 2025 the Goethe-Institut accepts only a valid passport as ID for every exam from A1 to C2. Fees on goethe.de/india for November 2026 are ₹9,400 for A1, ₹10,600 for A2 and ₹18,800 for B1, GST included.
Fees in rupees
| Exam | Fee | Can you book one module? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1: Start Deutsch 1 | ₹9,400 | No, all four parts together | goethe.de, A1 India |
| A2 | ₹10,600 | No, all four parts together | goethe.de, A2 India |
| B1 | ₹18,800 for all four modules | Yes: ₹4,700 per module (reading, listening, writing or speaking) | goethe.de, B1 India |
All three pages say the prices include 18% GST. We read them on 13 October 2026 for dates in Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune and Trichy. The fee is shown next to each date and can change; the booking page is the reference. telc exams in India are run by licensed centres that set their own fees and dates: find one with telc's official centre search (India is in its country list).
For B1, the module option matters if you fail one part: you re-sit that module for ₹4,700 instead of paying ₹18,800 again. Check with your target employer or university whether they accept module results from different dates.

Booking without getting cheated
- Book only on goethe.de. The Goethe-Institut warns that agents selling “original” certificates, guaranteed passes, a stand-in candidate or paid registration are frauds, and that using a fake certificate can be prosecuted. Report offers to pruefungen@goethe.de. Employers and embassies verify certificates at goethe.de/verify (fraud prevention page).
- Create your Mein Goethe.de account before booking opens. Some dates show “Bookable from” with a time, for example Mumbai A1 on 23 November 2026, bookable from 19 October 2026 at 10:00 AM. Be logged in a few minutes early with your passport details ready.
- Type your name exactly as in your passport. The passport is the only ID accepted on the day, so a spelling difference between booking and passport is a risk you can avoid.
- Pick paper or computer. The date list has a filter for paper-based and computer-based exams; some institutes run selected exams on laptops on their premises.
- Plan your hours honestly. The Goethe-Institut estimates 80 to 200 lessons of 45 minutes to reach A1, 200 to 350 for A2 and 350 to 650 for B1, depending on what you already know.
On the day
- Bring your valid passport. No other ID is accepted.
- Dictionaries and phones are not allowed in the writing or speaking parts.
- B1 written modules run about 165 minutes: reading 65, listening about 40, writing 60, with a break of at least 15 minutes between modules. Speaking is usually in pairs, about 15 minutes, after 15 minutes of preparation in which you may write keyword notes.
- A1 writing is 20 minutes and the speaking part is a group exam of about 15 minutes. A2 writing is 30 minutes; speaking is in pairs, about 15 minutes.
- Your certificate is issued digitally: the Goethe-Institut explains the download in this PDF.
