URSSAF sends you a formal notice (mise en demeure)
In short
A formal notice (mise en demeure) is an official letter claiming unpaid social contributions or surcharges. It comes before enforced collection (the « contrainte »).
Deadlines to check
- You have 1 month to pay or settle. After that, URSSAF can issue a contrainte (enforcement order).
- To challenge the amount: write to URSSAF's amicable appeals board (CRA) within 2 months of receipt.
What to do
- Check the periods and amounts claimed (missing turnover returns, estimated contributions…).
- If a return is missing, file it: the estimated amount will be recalculated on your real income.
- If you cannot pay everything, ask for a payment plan from your online account (messaging) or by phone.
- If you disagree, write to the CRA before the deadline with your documents.
Watch out: Do not ignore a formal notice: the enforcement order that may follow has the effect of a court judgment.
