The CAF says you were overpaid
In short
An « indu » or « trop-perçu » is money the CAF believes it paid you by mistake, for example after a change in income that was reported late. The notice shows the amount, the period and how to repay.
Deadlines to check
- To challenge it: write to your CAF's amicable appeals board (CRA), usually within 2 months of the notice. The exact deadline and appeal route are written on the notice.
- The CAF can only claim overpayments from the last 2 years (5 years in case of fraud or false statement).
- You can ask for a debt write-off (full or partial) at any time; for an RSA debt, the request goes to the département council.
What to do
- Check the period and the calculation: do they match a real change in your situation?
- If you agree but cannot pay everything: ask for a payment plan. Repayment can also be deducted from your future benefits.
- If you disagree: write to the CRA before the deadline, with your explanation and documents.
- If you are in financial difficulty: ask for a debt write-off and explain your situation.
- If you are not satisfied with the answer: you can contact the CAF mediator from your online account (« Nous contacter »).
Watch out: Fraud is punished with financial penalties. If you simply forgot to report a change, say so clearly in your reply.
