Two questions from Chapters 1–3
1. When Edna comes back from the beach, what does Mr. Pontellier take from his vest pocket and hand to her?
- A The rings she had left with him before bathing
- B A ten-dollar bill to spend on the children's treats
- C A letter from her sister who is away in the East
- D The key to the family's bath-house on the beach
Answer key
A. Edna silently reaches out and he returns her rings; the ten-dollar bill stays in his pocket for the game at Klein's.
2. After the ladies praise the box of treats from New Orleans, the narrator adds: "Mrs. Pontellier was forced to admit that she knew of none better." What does the word "forced" suggest?
- A Her husband ordered her to praise him.
- B She is jealous that the other ladies admire her husband.
- C She is embarrassed that the box is smaller than usual.
- D She agrees under pressure, without real warmth.
Answer key
D. Coming right after the scene of the night before, "forced" shows Edna conceding the point because the facts and the company require it, not out of feeling.
