Two questions from Chapters 1–2
1. After John Reed makes Jane fetch the book she was reading behind the curtain, what does he do with it?
- A Tears out the pictures and drops them in the fire
- B Hurls it at her, so that she falls and cuts her head
- C Hides it and tells his mother that Jane stole it
- D Hands it to Eliza and orders Jane out of the breakfast-room
Answer key
B. John throws the volume at Jane; she falls against the door and cuts her head, which is why blood trickles down her neck during the fight. He claims the books are his but does not hide or destroy this one.
2. Among Bewick's pictures, Jane lingers over "the rock standing up alone in a sea of billow and spray" and a wreck under a cold moon. Why are such images fitting for her that afternoon?
- A They show her plan to run away to sea when she is older
- B They echo her own isolation and the storm outside the window
- C They are the only pictures the Reeds allow her to look at
- D They remind her of a seaside holiday she spent with the Reeds
Answer key
B. Shut out from the family group and gazing at a rain-lashed lawn, Jane is drawn to images of lone rocks and wrecks that mirror her own state; nothing suggests a plan to go to sea or a rule about which pictures she may see.
