Letter 48, 48N or 48SI: your licence points
In short
The Ministry of the Interior writes to you when your points balance changes. The letter's name tells you the situation:
Deadlines to check
- Letter 48: one or more points were removed. No action required.
- Letter 48N: probationary licence with at least 3 points removed; it invites you to take a road safety course (mandatory in some cases, check the letter).
- Letter 48SI: you have no points left and your licence is cancelled. You must return it to the prefecture within 10 clear days (jours francs).
What to do
- Check your balance on the official « Mes points permis » service.
- If you receive a 48N, read carefully whether the course is mandatory and by when.
- If you receive a 48SI, stop driving and get advice quickly on possible appeals.
- To recover points: a road safety awareness course is possible under conditions.
Watch out: Driving with a cancelled licence is a criminal offence.
