Residence permits (ANEF, prefecture)
ANEF: filing certificate or extended-processing certificate
In short
When you apply for a residence permit online (ANEF), you receive several documents one after another. They do not all have the same value:
Deadlines to check
- Filing certificate (attestation de dépôt): proves you applied. It does not prove legal stay, has no validity period and does not allow you to work.
- Extended-processing certificate (attestation de prolongation d'instruction): a provisional residence document, valid for 3 months maximum, renewed until the decision. Your right to work depends on the permit you applied for.
- Favourable decision certificate: your permit has been granted; it is also a provisional residence document until you get the card.
What to do
- Download and keep every certificate from your ANEF account.
- Watch the expiry date of the extended-processing certificate; a new one should appear in your account before it ends.
- If the administration asks for more documents, reply within the deadline shown in your account.
- Show the certificate to your employer if it allows work.
Watch out: If your certificate expires without renewal or you cannot reach the prefecture, get help quickly (France services, an association, a lawyer).
